IMPLICATIONS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON THE BREEDING SUCCESS OF SWALLOWS, MARTINS AND SWIFTS IN PORTUGAL

Still in its early stages, this project seeks to assess the effect of climate change on the nesting sites dynamics for different species of swallows and swifts that breed on national territory. The work planned to be carried out in the project will be directed essentially to the north, centre and south of the country, in order to collect information from different areas that are exposed to different effects of climate change. In addition, it will also include all the information gathered through a citizen science campaign, which will extend the scope of the work to the whole country.

The regular monitoring and collection of data on distribution, density, phenology and breeding success of the various species will allow us to define population trends and predict their viability, as well as understand possible correlations of the climate change impact on the conservation of these birds. Thus, the creation of a robust and quality database, pioneer in Portugal, will be essential to achieve the expected results.

So that we can achieve results that are truly significant and help us relate climate change to the reproductive success of swallows, your contribution can be fundamental! If you see a nest of any of these species, register it on our platform.
